The Bill Green Mentor Program
Back to PROGRAMS MAIN

"You give these young musicians an opportunity to interact with wonderful role models and experience being part of a professional recording session. Brilliant!"
- Bobby Rodriguez, Trumpet and Workshop Mentor

Each year candidates from junior high, high school, and college, through age 20, may audition. All instruments will be considered. Jazz students will be asked to play scales, sight read, and play along with a professional rhythm section.

If chosen, each student will receive a scholarship consisting of ten hours of private one-on-one lessons with a professional jazz player, four workshops to practice with other students, and a professional recording session featuring all of the students.

More than 200 students have completed this program over the past twelve years, and many have gone on to jazz programs at many music schools including North Texas State, The New School, UCLA, USC, etc. Mentors have included: Roger Neumann, Leslie Drayton, Tamir Hendelman, Steve Barnes, Ira Nepus, John Clayton, Bobby Rodriguez, Dave Koonse, Rick Shaw, Joe LaBarbera, Bill Cunliffe, and many other prominent jazz musicians. For more details, and to get an application, call or fax Larry Hathaway at 805-496-5400, jazzguy@roadrunner.com.

Now in its twelfth year, this annual January-to-April Program supplements the marginal school education available to promising young jazz musicians. Mentors are renowned jazz musicians who are also reputed educators.
