Jazzgiving was born in December, 1995 when
a fire at George Washington Preparatory High School
destroyed their instruments, music library and
uniforms. The band was the current winner of the
L.A. Citywide Band Competition. The Los Angeles
Jazz Society presented a Christmas Jazzgiving
Concert for the purpose of acquiring instrument
donations from individuals, manufacturers and
musicians. The program successfully replaced the
loss, raising over $215,000 worth of new and used
instruments. The Society also arranged for ASMAC
to replace a major portion of their music library.
Jazzgiving
is now an ongoing project that acquires, restores
and distributes new and used instruments for donation
to needy jazz music programs in the Los Angeles
School District. Instruments are accepted throughout
the year. Contact the LAJS if you wish to donate
an instrument to this worthy cause. Your gift
is tax deductible! Donations to the Los Angeles
Unified School District now exceed $280,000.
