TO FRIENDS OF JAZZ......AND ARTS EDUCATION

LOS ANGELES JAZZ SOCIETY has joined the advocacy campaign to voice support for arts education in LAUSD, the second largest school district in the nation. The campaign was developed in response to California's continuing fiscal crisis and LAUSD's subsequent proposal to eliminate 50% of Elementary Arts Teachers, or 173 of 345 teachers, for the 2010-2011 school year. The purpose of the campaign is to win board support to maintain the integrity of LAUSD's Arts Education program by retaining its elementary arts teachers. JAZZ IN SCHOOLS CONCERTS IN FEBRUARY

The Los Angeles Jazz Society will be presenting jazz education concerts in 45 elementary schools during the month of February, Black History Month.

Initiated in 1988, the Jazz Society has provided free jazz education concerts in Los Angeles schools during the month of February, benefiting approximately 23,000 young people every year.  Three different jazz combos will be visiting the schools presenting an interactive program that was created especially for young people, with students marching, clapping and dancing.  These concerts have elicited raves from teachers and principals and the students have said that they now like jazz and would like to play an instrument.

Anyone wishing to attend a concert may do so by selecting a school from the concert schedule and notifying the Jazz in Schools Director, Lois Saffian, via
