JAZZ IN SCHOOLS
The Los Angeles Jazz Society is celebrating Black History Month by presenting 90 jazz education concerts in 45 elementary schools during the month, reaching about 23,000 young students.
Three jazz combos led by leaders Washington Rucker, creator of the musical program, Maestro Delbert Taylor and Charles Owens, present concerts that are designed especially for the enjoyment and education of young people. During concerts, students are introduced to the instruments and their capabilities; they see a demonstration of how the musicians relate to each other in the improvisational style of jazz; they are exposed to different forms of jazz and hear how they developed historically; they learn how jazz is related to current forms of pop music and they interact with musicians in clapping, marching and dancing.

BILL GREEN MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
Twenty-five lucky young musicians are presently enrolled in the Bill Green Mentorship program where they will receive eight weeks of free training in advanced music techniques from sixteen professional musicians, individually and in five group workshops. The last workshop will be a professional recording session and each student will receive a CD of the recording.
At the conclusion, graduates and mentors will present a joint concert at Catalina’s Jazz Club. Watch for details and dates.
